Ragusa
Set amidst rocky peaks to the north-west of Modica, Ragusa is one of the cities with a dual personality. On top of the hill rises Ragusa Superiore, a busy city by the regular plan with all the modern features of a modern provincial capital. Lower down, set into the hillside, is Ragusa, the prestigious center of Ragusa., Characterized by slope, intricate alleys, gray stone houses and Baroque palaces. Like all other cities of the region including Ragusa Ibla (the old city) was destroyed by the earthquake of 1693 and the new town, Ragusa Superiore, was built on the plateau, overlooking the original settlement. But the old aristocracy, reluctant to abandon the old and rickety buildings, rebuilt Ragusa exactly the same place. The two cities were unified in 1927.
Modica
With its medieval center perched on the hillside and its spectacular Baroque church, Modica is one of the most charming towns in southern Sicily. However, unlike the other UNESCO sites in this area, its treasures teoricinon are concentrated in a single street or central square: for they are scattered throughout the city and require a bit of research and commitment on the part of the visitor. In fact, is not immediate orientate in Modica, but after having familiarized with its crowded streets and its steep stairways, you'll discover a city authentic and full of warmth, friendly atmosphere and with a strong pride.
